Renault Kwid to take on Maruti Alto with a 1000cc variant
Renault is taking on Maruti Alto’s unassailable hold on the entry level car segment by introducing a 1000 cc variant of its Kwid. Since its launch in mid-2015, the Renault Kwid has seen great success. Now Renault wants to up its ante with the more powerful variant. An automatic gearbox (AMT) variant will also be introduced in the 1-litre version.
Maruti’s Alto entry level pricing starts at  Rs 2.5- lakhs and the top level K-10 AMT version is priced at Rs. 4.05 – 4.25 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). Renault Kwid is expected to price its 1-litre variant at Rs 4.2 lakhs and the AMT at Rs 4.9 lakhs.
Hyundai had set out to beat Maruti’s Alto earlier, with its Eon. This car failed to make a dent in Alto’s market share. Hyundai had also come out with a 1-litre Eon, which again failed to capture the entry level buyers in a big way. Now Renault is taking the exact same route. But the difference is in the fact that the Kwid has managed to book over 1 lakh vehicles in less than a year, since launch.
The Renault Kwid has had a great response from the market. Unique features like more space, bluetooth connectivity has made it a darling of the segment. As a result, Maruti’s complete hold on this segment has now been shaken a bit. We will have to wait and see how Maruti responds to this challenge from Renault Kwid.
